Readers Letters, Stockport Express March 31st 2010

Dear Sir/Madam,

In reply to your article entitled ‘Anger as school scoops generous portion of cash for pupil lunches’ February 24th 2010.
Reddish Vale also bid for a conservatory type addition to the dining room at a cost of £160k.

Our bid was less ambitious than Bramhall High School’s because we have to match the funding from a grant called Devolved Formula Capital (DCF)
Most of our DCF is earmarked for repairs to the roof( £110k) and repairs to the boilers (£20k) so our bid was limited by this knowledge.

Bramhall are fortunate in that they can fund raise to help with their matched funding : we serve the areas of Reddish and Brinnington where there is a high deprivation factor and high unemployment.

The amount of funding we did receive for our limited bid was £22k less than we asked for and therefore we will have to reconsider our plans.

Our uptake of meals is above the national average but we would like to improve even more.

We do not have enough space in our dining room or enough room for pupils to eat sandwiches.

For many of our pupils school lunch is the only hot meal of the day and so we are desperate to extend our facilities .All our meals comply with the Governments nutritional guidelines, and are freshly prepared each
day.

Reddish Vale Technology College is disadvantaged twice over ,once for not having the ability to fund raise from wealthy parents and secondly by the Schools Forum not recognising the needs of pupils living in areas of deprivation and giving 75% of this grant to the school in the wealthiest part of the borough.

Yours Sincerely,

Councillor Andy Verdeille
Chair of Governors

Heaton’s and Reddish Area Committee!

This committee discusses Reddish issues every month and the public can attend and ask questions. But did you know that local Community groups can come and make a short bidding presentation and there are modest area grant’s available to help them in their work?

The next meeting is at the Heatons Centre starting at 6pm on Monday 26th April. Meetings alternate between the Town Hall and the Heaton’s Centre on Thornfeld Rd next to Heatons Moor library. The 42a bus stops almost outside. Contact David or Peter on 292 5693 or 432 2188.

New School to be built for North Reddish...

The contract for the new school at Mill Lane has been let to BAM Construction at a cost of £6.8million. We expect construction to start soon. This will give us a state of the art building including a full Children’s centre to help our teachers take our kids firmly into the 21st Century. We will be making sure that the construction phase minimises inconvenience to local residents.
